How Customers Find You on Google: A Plain Guide for Owners
No technical vocabulary. How Google decides who appears first, and what you can do yourself in half an hour.
"I built a website and nobody visits it." We hear that a lot.
Usually the problem is not the website. The problem is that nobody told Google you exist. Here is how it actually works, in plain language.
How Google works, briefly
Google does three things:
- It walks the web and reads pages. This is called crawling.
- It stores what it read in an enormous index.
- It ranks results when someone searches, by whichever page it judges most fitting.
If your site is not in step 2, you will never appear in step 3. That is the first thing most people miss.
Step one: let Google know you exist
This is a simple technical step called registering the site in Search Console. Whoever built your site should have done it. If you do not know whether it happened, ask.
The quick test: open Google and type site: followed by your site name with no space, for example:
site:alriyadh.sa
If pages come back, you are indexed. If nothing comes back, Google does not know about your site yet.
Step two, the big one for you: your Google Maps listing
This is the highest return available to a local business owner, and most of them neglect it.
When someone searches "car workshop near me" or "dental clinic in Abha", the first thing Google shows is a map with three businesses. Appearing there matters more than appearing in the ordinary blue links.
To show up:
- Register your business with a Google Business Profile, free.
- Verify ownership, usually by postcard or a phone call.
- Fill in every field: category, address, hours, mobile number, website link.
- Add real photos of the premises, inside and out.
- Ask satisfied customers to leave a review.
Reviews are the strongest factor here. Ten honest reviews move the needle more than almost anything else you can do.
Step three: write your pages in the words people search
People do not search for "integrated solutions". They search in simple words:
- "air conditioner repair riyadh"
- "labour dispute lawyer jeddah"
- "graduation sweets dammam"
So if your pages are written in generic marketing language, Google cannot tell what you actually do.
The practical rule: name your service and name your city naturally in the main heading and the first paragraph.
Step four: a page per service
One page called "Services" listing ten services with a single line each is far weaker than ten pages, each explaining one service.
We are not saying build ten pages today. Start with your two or three most important services.
Step five: patience
This is the part nobody tells you. Appearing in Google is not instant:
- The Maps listing: you can see results within a couple of weeks.
- Ordinary search results: usually two to six months for a new site.
If anyone promises you the top spot within a week, ask them exactly how.
Things not to do
- Don't buy links. Google penalises this.
- Don't repeat your city name twenty times on a page. That now hurts you rather than helping.
- Don't copy a competitor's text. The worst thing you can do.
- Don't run five websites for the same business. It splits your strength instead of concentrating it.
What can you do today in half an hour?
- Check your site is indexed with the
site:trick. - Open your Google Business Profile and fill in the missing fields.
- Add five new photos.
- Message three happy customers and ask for a review.
Those four steps alone do more for a small business than most of what gets sold as "search engine optimisation".
